Jérôme Bel "The Show Must Go On"

2012.10.20 at MoMA

My friend who was crazy about performance arts recommended me Jérôme Bel, so I took a day trip to MoMA.

This was my first time watching his work.

At first, no one was on the stage (actually, it's not a stage but an area divided by tapes), and just the music started.
Some in the crowd stood up suddenly, and they went on to the stage.
Then, the performance started.

It consists of 6 parts.
In the 1st one, the dancers repeated dancing as they were in the night club and just standing doing nothing, again and again.

The 2nd one was interesting, each dancer did a particular movement like massaging her berry, waving his sweater, rolling on the floor, etc.

The 3rd and the 4th part were a kind of melancholic ballet dances, and I couldn't understand what these part meant in the whole performance.

The 5th one was Los Del Rio's La Macarena, that's all. (It was so funny!!)

And the last one was the "Headphones".

I thought the 20 dancers meant the diversity of people (about 13 were men and 7 women, both white and black), but no Asian...

Also on the same day, Jérôme Bel talked about the relationship between his performance and other works in MoMA, and his works and the spectators.
He emphasized the word "interpret".
